About the Role
Department: Paving Crew

Direct Supervisory Responsibility: No
Functional Summary
The Asphalt Screwman’s primary function is to adjust the screed height on the paving machine to ensure proper depth, grade and finish. The Screed Operator is also responsible for ensuring the consistency of the asphalt mat and the overall ride quality of the finished pavement.
Key Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Asphalt Screwman / Screed Operator include, but are not limited to:
Equipment Operation
• Operates valves to regulate the flow of material at a specified rate (yield).
• Signals the paving machine operator to start and stop.
• Observes the distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution.
• Turns handwheels to set the angle and depth of the screed.
• Using depth gauge, verifies depth specifications of the compacted asphalt.
• Performs daily maintenance on tools and ensures all tools are stored properly at the end of each shift.
• Assists in the general operation of each job site, including:
o Installing/removing auto paving electronics
o Adding/removing screed extensions
o Cleaning excess asphalt off of the paver
o Daily preventative maintenance of paver
o Flagging traffic
o Set-up and maintenance of erosion control
o Loading and unloading of materials
o Shoveling dirt, gravel and asphalt
o Set-up and maintenance of traffic control aids
o Checking and maintaining grade stakes
o General clean-up around job site
• Must ensure a solid understanding of, and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
• Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics.
Safety
• Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
• Attend daily and weekly safety meetings and inspections.
• Work with Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
• Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
Teamwork
• Participate as a vital team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
• Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with all employees to exchange information and gather ideas.
• Collaborate with any project teams on other special initiatives, as required.

Requirements
Qualifications
Education, Training and Certifications
· High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
· Class 5 Drivers License
Work Experience
· Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience within the road construction industry
· 2 to 3 years’ experience operating an asphalt paver as an operator or screed operator
Technical Knowledge
· Knowledge of Rollers and other heavy equipment.
· Knowledge of road construction materials, road construction processes and industry requirements.
· Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.

Working Conditions
· Out of town travel is required.
· Overtime as required.
· Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
· Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
· Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
· Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
· Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
